Job Description
Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) is a professional caregiver who is responsible and accountable for providing quality patient care within a total patient care delivery model in accordance with the standards of practice and competencies of the College of Nurses of Ontario, the Regulated Health Professionals Act and Scarborough Health Network (SHN). The RPN will be part of a busy department providing service across the spectrum of urgent care including the patient population of pediatrics.
Responsibilities:
• Practice in accordance with the Regulated Health Professions Act
• Work in collaboration with the interdisciplinary health care team to assess and treat a wide variety of patients and their health emergencies
• Perform detailed holistic assessment of clients
• Provide health teaching to patients and families including thorough discharge instructions to ensure continuity of care in the community
• Develop linkages with external partners as appropriate to ensure continuity of care
• Utilize the Clinical Information System
• Contribute to the development and update of clinic references, policies and procedures
• Liaise between patients, families, other members of the health care team and community partners
• Apply clinical knowledge and leadership skills to collect and interpret information, make appropriate clinical decisions, and conduct therapeutic nursing interventions.
Requirements:
• Current Registered Practical Nurse registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification required
• Two years related clinical experience in the past five years in an urgent care or emergency environment
• Acute medical/surgical experience within the last two years
• Current medication administration experience
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
• Demonstrates excellent problem-solving, decision making and critical-thinking skills
• Demonstrates excellent organizational, time-management and team-building skills
• Demonstrates initiative and the ability to function both independently and as an inter-professional team member
• Demonstrates a commitment to customer service when dealing with patients,
colleagues and volunteers and other members of the community and public
• Demonstrates values consistent with SHN′s Code of Conduct and is committed to
fostering a healthy and positive work environment in accordance with Health & Safety policy and legislation.
• Demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to SHN’s comprehensive safety
programs and practices, including staff safety, patient safety, and environmental
safety and participates in regular in-service education in this area.
• Demonstrates excellent work performance and attendance record
• Engages in ethical conduct and strives to understand and appreciate the diversity of
our patient/staff population and community
• Care is characterized by up-to-date, ethical, and resource-efficient clinical practice and effective communication in partnership with patients, families, and clinical teams.
• Must have demonstrated leadership skills, excellent critical thinking and the ability to adapt to unpredictable situations.
