Summary of the PSW Role

Personal Support Workers (PSWs) provide hands-on, compassionate care to patients, residents, and clients who need assistance with daily living. PSWs play a critical role in maintaining dignity, safety, comfort, and quality of life for the people they support in long-term care, retirement homes, hospitals, and home/community care settings.


Key Responsibilities

As a PSW, typical duties may include:

  • Personal Care & Hygiene
    • Assist with bathing, showering, grooming, dressing, toileting, and continence care.
    • Support safe transfers and positioning using appropriate techniques and equipment (e.g., sliders, lifts as trained).
  • Mobility & Safety
    • Assist clients with walking, mobility aids, and exercises as directed.
    • Follow all safety, infection prevention, and fall prevention procedures.
    • Immediately report any safety hazards, incidents, or changes in client condition.
  • Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
    • Support with eating, drinking, and meal setup; monitor intake as required.
    • Assist with light housekeeping related to client care (tidying, changing linens, organizing personal items).
    • Help with routines such as getting up in the morning and preparing for bed.
  • Emotional & Social Support
    • Provide companionship, active listening, and reassurance to clients and families.
    • Encourage participation in appropriate social, recreational, and cognitive activities.
    • Promote a respectful, inclusive, and person-centred environment.
  • Observation & Reporting
    • Observe and promptly report changes in physical, cognitive, or emotional status to the nurse or supervisor.
    • Document care provided in electronic or paper charting systems according to employer policy.
  • Teamwork & Professionalism
    • Work collaboratively with nurses, therapists, and other healthcare team members.
    • Maintain confidentiality, dignity, and privacy of all clients at all times.
    • Follow organizational policies, care plans, and professional boundaries.

Qualifications

Typical requirements for PSW roles may include:

  • Successful completion of a recognized Personal Support Worker (PSW) certificate program or equivalent (as accepted by the employer and provincial regulations).
  • Experience in long-term care, retirement, hospital, or community care is an asset (students and new graduates are also encouraged to apply).
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, transferring, and prolonged standing/walking.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to follow directions and care plans.
  • Clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening (or willingness to obtain).
  • Up-to-date immunizations and TB testing may be required by individual employers.
  • CPR/First Aid and additional certifications (e.g., GPA, PIECES, dementia care) are considered an asset.
