Summary of the RN Role
Registered Nurses (RNs) provide comprehensive, evidence-based nursing care to patients, residents, and clients with a wide range of health conditions and levels of acuity. RNs are responsible for assessment, care planning, coordination, supervision, and evaluation of care, working within the standards and scope of practice defined by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and employer policies.
RNs play a leadership role in coordinating the healthcare team, advocating for patients and families, and supporting safe, high-quality care across acute, chronic, community, and long-term care settings.
Key Responsibilities
Typical RN duties may include, but are not limited to:
Comprehensive Assessment & Care Planning
- Perform holistic nursing assessments, including physical, psychosocial, and functional status.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans in collaboration with patients, families, and the interprofessional team.
- Prioritize care based on patient acuity, complexity, and risk.
Direct Patient Care & Clinical Interventions
- Provide direct nursing care such as wound care, IV therapy, complex medication management, post-operative care, and chronic disease management as appropriate to the setting.
- Monitor patient responses to treatments and interventions, and adjust care plans as needed.
- Support activities of daily living where needed while promoting independence and dignity.
Medication & Treatment Management
- Safely prepare, administer, and monitor medications (oral, IV, IM, SC, etc.) in accordance with policies and physician/NP orders.
- Recognize and respond promptly to adverse reactions, changes in condition, and clinical deterioration.
- Maintain accurate documentation of all medications and treatments delivered.
Coordination, Supervision & Collaboration
- Coordinate and oversee the delivery of care by the healthcare team, including RPNs and PSWs, within their scopes of practice.
- Participate in and/or lead interprofessional rounds, care conferences, and handovers.
- Communicate effectively with physicians, nurse practitioners, allied health professionals, patients, and families.
Patient/Family Education & Advocacy
- Provide health teaching about diagnoses, medications, treatments, and self-care strategies.
- Support patients and families in making informed decisions, respecting their values and preferences.
- Advocate for patient safety, quality care, and equitable access to services.
Safety, Quality & Professional Practice
- Adhere to infection prevention and control guidelines, including PPE use and hand hygiene.
- Follow all safety policies, including fall prevention, restraint use, emergency response, and incident reporting.
- Practice in accordance with CNO standards, code of conduct, and legal/ethical requirements.
- Participate in quality improvement, audits, and ongoing professional development.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain clear, timely, and accurate documentation in electronic or paper patient records.
- Report changes in condition, critical incidents, and risks to appropriate leaders.
- Ensure confidentiality and privacy of all patient information.
Qualifications
Typical requirements for RN roles may include:
- Current Certificate of Registration as a Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) or equivalent nursing degree.
- Relevant clinical experience in one or more of the following is an asset:
- Medical-surgical / acute care
- Emergency / critical care
- Long-term care / complex continuing care
- Mental health / community health / primary care
- Current CPR (BLS) certification; additional certifications (e.g., ACLS, PALS, TNCC, wound care, dialysis) may be required depending on the role.
- Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
- Effective communication, de-escalation, and conflict resolution abilities.
- Demonstrated leadership, teamwork, and ability to mentor/support other staff.
- Clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening (or willingness to obtain).
- Immunizations, TB testing, and other health clearances as required by specific employers.
