Summary of the RPN Role
Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) provide direct, hands-on nursing care within their scope of practice, supporting residents, patients, and clients with a wide range of health needs. Working under the standards of the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and employer policies, RPNs play a key role in assessment, care planning, medication administration, health teaching, and coordination of care in long-term care, retirement, hospital, clinic, and community settings.
Key Responsibilities
Typical RPN duties may include, but are not limited to:
Clinical Care & Assessment
- Perform focused nursing assessments, monitor vital signs, and observe changes in health status.
- Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of individualized care plans.
- Provide direct nursing care such as wound care, catheter care, diabetic care, and other treatments within scope.
Medication & Treatment Administration
- Safely prepare and administer medications (oral, topical, injectable, etc.) according to orders and policies.
- Monitor therapeutic and side effects, and promptly report concerns to the appropriate provider.
- Accurately document all medication administration and treatments in the designated system.
Resident/Patient Support & Education
- Support residents and families in understanding care plans, medications, and health conditions.
- Promote independence, dignity, and quality of life through person- and family-centred care.
- Provide emotional support, active listening, and culturally sensitive communication.
Coordination & Collaboration
- Communicate effectively with Registered Nurses (RNs), physicians, allied health professionals, PSWs, and other team members.
- Participate in interdisciplinary care conferences and handovers.
- Coordinate and prioritize workloads to ensure timely, safe care delivery.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate, timely, and legible documentation in electronic or paper health records.
- Report changes in condition, incidents, and safety concerns to appropriate leaders.
- Follow all organizational policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Safety, Quality & Professional Practice
- Adhere to infection prevention and control practices, including PPE and hand hygiene.
- Follow safety protocols, including fall prevention, restraint policies, and emergency procedures.
- Practice in accordance with CNO standards, code of conduct, and scope of practice.
- Engage in ongoing learning, training, and quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
Typical requirements for RPN positions may include:
- Current Certificate of Registration as a Registered Practical Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
- Practical Nursing diploma from an approved program.
- Experience in one or more of the following is an asset:
- Long-term care / retirement
- Medical-surgical or acute care
- Primary care / clinics
- Home and community care
- Current CPR (BLS) certification and other employer-required certifications.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and respond to changing client needs.
- Strong assessment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with residents, families, and team members.
- Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and commitment to safe, ethical practice.
- Clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening (or willingness to obtain).
- Immunizations and TB testing as required by specific employers.
RPNs with equivalent experience from other provinces (e.g., LPNs) may be considered if eligible for registration with CNO.
